I come home to myself through writing.
As a friend recently said, “I write. Therefore I am.”
This is true for me.
I do not know myself fully until I have a pen in my hand. When I write, I become real.
Writing allows you to bring the mysterious essence of your being into form through words on a page. Through words on the page you begin to see a narrative — the one you are writing and the one that is writing you. You see the shape and contours of your life more clearly, as if looking into a mirror.
The words you craft and the narrative you tell allow others to see the “you” within your body because the words carry your interior essence within them so it can reach, touch, and connect with the interior essence of someone else who reads them.
It’s an act of communion.
As Stephen King says, “writing is telepathy.”
Writing allows us to know ourselves and to know each other — and not just like a simple handshake. No, no, no. Writing allows us to crawl inside the skin of another human being.
Through writing we touch one another’s souls.
Through writing we remember our divinity.
Writing is a form of creation. Creation is simply a creator expressing and becoming aware of itself through form.
To write is to create. To create is to be the Creator.
When we commit acts of creation, we co-create life along with the Source of all Creation. We become one with “God.”
We can write a red wheelbarrow glazed with rainwater beside the white chickens into a moment of meaning. We can write rape into a story of recovery, a recovery of our own body, the body of all women, the body of the Earth. We can write grief into a window with a view of a wildflower meadow or a steep mountain of unexpressed love.
We can write ourselves home through our story of foreclosure, as I have been doing.
We can write joy by writing what wants to be written instead of what we think we should write. We can write into our own power and value by writing the meaning our lives are attempting to convey.
We can write ourselves into the sacredness and value of who we really are by expressing our story.
We can write ourselves whole.
We can write ourselves holy.
We simply have to get to the blank page and write.
It’s time to come home to yourself through writing and share the story-gift of you.
