Rooting Yourself Through Writing in Turbulent Times

As the world burns—figuratively and literally—it’s easy to feel untethered. The chaos and sorrow around us can feel insurmountable, and the temptation to dismiss writing as a luxury or indulgence only grows. But writing is neither frivolous nor optional. It is essential!

Writing is an act of grounding, a way to find emotional seating, inner refuge, and a greater sense of self and soul. It is not simply about what you write or publish—it’s about the act itself. Writing is a practice that strengthens your foundation and connects you to the deepest parts of yourself enabling you to meet life’s unfathomable challenges with clarity, resilience, and compassion.

What Is The Writing Ground?

The Writing Ground is an invitation to deepen or reimagine your relationship with writing. This 3-part series explores writing not as a discipline to master, but as a devotion—a promise to yourself, a gesture of connection, an act of prayer.

Through a blend of guided reflections, writing exercises, and community sharing and conversation, The Writing Ground will help you:

  • Cultivate a writing practice that feels sacred and sustaining.
  • Use writing to root yourself amidst chaos and uncertainty.
  • Strengthen your sense of self so you are less swayed by fear, manipulation, or distraction.
  • Harness writing as a tool for healing—both personal and collective.

Why Devotion, Not Discipline?

Discipline implies rigidity, control, and force. Devotion, on the other hand, calls us to show up with reverence, intention, and love. To be devoted is to remain faithful—to return again and again, not out of obligation, but because it matters deeply.

When we write with devotion, we open ourselves to the possibility that writing can be a form of prayer:

  • An asking for understanding.
  • A listening.
  • A plea for peace.
  • A gesture of connection to what lives within and beyond the self.

This is the heart of The Writing Ground—writing as a way to listen deeply, express authentically, and root yourself in a practice that steadies your soul, deepens your self-awareness, and strengthens your capacity to meet the world with courage and clarity.

    Why Now?

As the world grows more chaotic and conflicted, the need for strong, rooted selves has never been greater. A strong sense of self and soul is the foundation for meeting and meaningfully tending to the challenges and sorrows of our time. It helps us resist the forces that seek to control, distract, or coerce—hatred, delusion, fearmongering, disinformation, and pernicious marketing.

Writing can be your way back to that strength. It can be your refuge, your grounding, and your path to resilience. As mythologist Michael Meade reminds us, “Meaningful creative practices have served as healing roads throughout the ages, ways to find psychological and spiritual growth as well as moments of wholeness and inner unity.”

    Writing is one such road.

What You’ll Discover in the Series

    1. Finding Your Ground
Learn how writing can center you amidst chaos, creating space for calm, clarity, and
    resilience.

    2. Writing as Prayer
Explore writing as a sacred practice of devotion, connection, and self-discovery.

    3. Strength for the World
Discover how writing helps build a rooted sense of self, enabling you to meet challenges with courage, creativity, and compassion.

Each session we’ll come together as a group on Zoom. I’ll lead us through a guided reflection followed by writing prompts. Bring your favorite materials to write with. We’ll also have time for some conversation and reflection.

Depending on the size of the group, we may do some writing shares, but the focus is on the powerful act of writing. We will not be doing feedback or writing development.

Writing together in community is one of the most reliable ways to kickstart a writing practice that has waned.
